UNITE to have one General Secretary

Tony Woodley has announced his intention to stand down as General Secretary much earlier than originally planned, so that Len McCluskey becomes sole General Secretary from 31st January 2011, earlier than planned. I think this is a really good decision, which will accelerate the process of UNITE moving on at a much faster pace than has been possible since the merger.

Len McCluskey plans to ask the Executive Council (EC) to appoint Tony Woodley to a senior position working on the "100% campaign" part of our strategy for growth until his normal retirement date.

Heinz Pickets Full of Beanz

Congratulations to UNITE members at Heinz on a very impressive turnout for their picket line in their 24 hour strike over pay. The strike completely stopped production at the huge Kitt Green site in Wigan. Let's hope Heinz management get the message, but if not, there can be no doubt of the ability of the workers to escalate the action if they have to.

UNITE Joint General Secretaries' Report (Nov/Dec 2010)

The latest (and last!) report from the Joint General Secretaries from the recent Executive Council (EC) meetings is now available. As usual, I will send it to UNITE members on request.

The November meeting only dealt with the General Secretary election. I am part way through producing my own report from the December meeting, which was more substantial.
